Questions for a new technology. | Kellan Elliott-McCreaGiven that coordination and communication swamp all other costs in modern software development it is a pressing area to invest in, especially as your team scales. I use a framework of a Small Number of Well Known Tools to build shared understanding in our complex systems over time. When we want to do something other than use the Small Number of Well Known Tools (in the small number of well known patterns), that’s a Departure. I have a long note I want to post on technical decision making and departures. In the mean time I want to share a short list of questions I’ve been using in various forms for over a decade to engage with The Dreaded Question.tagged: frameworksquestions23-09-2022
What Height Does My Decking Railing Need To Be In The UK? - Glass & Stainless300mm off the ground. For this platform height in a domestic property, any railings or balustrades should be at least 900mm higher than the deck itself. This means that the handrail must be situated directly on top of the balustrade itself if you want to create the lowest profile possible. If you were to place the handrail to the side of the balustrade, lower down, then it would not meet UK building regulations. In commercial properties the handrail must be at least 1100mm higher than the deck. As a result, you may need to increase the height of your balustrade in order to ensure there isn’t too great a gap between the top of the balustrade and the railingtagged: decking20-09-2022

yalc - npmWhen developing and authoring multiple packages (private or public), you often find yourself in need of using the latest/WIP versions in other projects that you are working on in your local environment without publishing those packages to the remote registry. NPM and Yarn address this issue with a similar approach of symlinked packages (npm/yarn link). Though this may work in many cases, it often brings nasty constraints and problems with dependency resolution, symlink interoperability between file systems, etc.tagged: yalc06-09-2022
Meaningful Motion with Action-Driven Animation | Tobias AhlinHow do we animate interfaces in ways that are not just beautiful, but meaningful? When we add motion to interfaces, we want to in one way or another improve the user experience, be it through aiding the comprehension of a concept, setting the mood, enhancing the perception of speed, or directing attention. Regardless of the intent of the animation, when animations fail to be meaningful, a common cause is that they simply tween between their hidden and visible states, rather than visualizing the actions that triggered the change of state. A window rarely just closes or opens; a message is sent, a draft is discarded, an item is used.tagged: motionanimationux05-09-2022
